What teeth whitening actually costs

Three routes, a 40× price spread, and a difference that is mostly about speed and supervision rather than a permanently different result.

The honest comparison

The gap between a $40 box of strips and an $800 in-office course is not a 20× difference in outcome. It is mostly three things: how strong the peroxide is, how well it stays on your teeth and off your gums, and whether someone qualified looked in your mouth first.

Custom trays are the reason the middle option exists and the reason many dentists suggest it first. A tray moulded to your teeth holds gel against the enamel and keeps it away from the gums. A stock tray or strip does neither well, which is why the same gel produces a patchier result and more sensitivity in the cheaper format.

Book the cleaning first. A lot of what people want to whiten is surface staining from coffee, tea, wine or tobacco, and a $100–$200 cleaning removes it. Whitening a freshly cleaned tooth also works better. Doing it in the other order wastes gel on stains that would have scrubbed off.

What whitening will not change

Peroxide lightens natural tooth structure. It has no effect on anything artificial, and this catches people out badly on front teeth:

If you have crowns or veneers on your front teeth, ask before you whiten. The sequence matters: whiten first, then match new restorations to the lighter shade. Doing it the other way round means redoing the restoration.

How long it lasts

Typically somewhere between six months and two years, and what you consume is the main variable. Coffee, tea, red wine, dark sodas and tobacco re-stain teeth steadily. Most people maintain with occasional top-ups rather than repeating the full course.

This is worth pricing in. An $800 in-office course that needs a $150 top-up annually is a different proposition from a one-time spend, and it is a fair question to ask the practice before booking.

Sensitivity

Temporary sensitivity during and shortly after whitening is common and usually settles within a few days. Higher peroxide concentrations and longer wear times tend to make it more likely. If you already have sensitive teeth, exposed roots or worn enamel, that is a conversation to have with a dentist before starting rather than something to push through.
