What cosmetic dental work actually costs
Typical US price ranges for every common cosmetic procedure, what actually drives the number up or down, and which cheaper alternatives are worth considering.

Cosmetic dental pricing is unusually opaque. Most practices do not publish it, quotes vary by thousands between two dentists in the same city, and almost none of it is covered by insurance. The table below is the starting point: typical ranges, and the single biggest reason each one moves.

These are ranges, not quotes. The spread inside each row is real — the same porcelain veneer genuinely runs $900 in one market and $2,500 in another. Get written treatment plans from two or three practices before committing to anything above about $2,000.
Start with the cheapest thing that actually works
A lot of people price veneers when what is bothering them is colour, and colour is the cheapest thing to change. The order below runs from least to most invasive, and it is worth working down it rather than starting at the bottom.
- Cleaning — $100–$200. Removes surface staining from coffee, tea, wine and tobacco. Sometimes this is the whole problem.
- Whitening — $20–$800 depending on route. Changes colour only. No effect on shape, gaps or alignment.
- Bonding — $300–$600 per tooth. Fixes chips, small gaps and worn edges. Reversible in the sense that no healthy enamel is removed for it.
- Aligners — $4,000–$7,000. Moves teeth. Fixes crowding and spacing without touching the teeth themselves.
- Veneers — $900–$2,500 per tooth. Changes shape and colour permanently. Enamel is removed and cannot be put back.
Veneers are not reversible. Preparing a tooth for a porcelain veneer means removing healthy enamel, and that tooth will need a veneer or crown on it for the rest of your life. Anything marketed as "no-prep" or "reversible" veneers is a different product with different limits — worth understanding before you sign.
Why insurance usually will not help
Most US dental plans exclude treatment done purely to improve appearance. Where insurance sometimes contributes is when a procedure also restores function — a crown on a cracked tooth, or an implant replacing a missing one. Whitening and elective veneers are almost always out of pocket.
That is why dental savings plans and practice financing come up so often in cosmetic consultations. They are not insurance; they are discount or credit arrangements, and the discount varies by practice. Check what the plan actually pays for your specific procedure before enrolling.
